I can't begin to tell you how freaking stoked I am for the Sunday Night Experience this weekend. It is going to be an incredible event for our entire church.
It definitely is going to be a new feeling to have our youth service on Sunday nights but I can't wait to ride the roller coaster that is SNE.
It will be our first DEVOyouthCHURCH service of 2009 and we will be doing it big! Everything is going to be fresh, new, and (*cough* *cough*) revamped. Pastor Sam is going to challenge students with a hard hitting message series in January. We will have all new media and service structures. It will be a great time for the ministry.
If you are reading this and wondering how I already know it is going to be amazing, it's because I do. I have complete confidence that God will bless the efforts. My rational for this is that we are not doing any of this for our own glory. Everything that DEVO will roll out in '09 is for God. He is the one we will see glorified by the videos, events, services, and outreach of DEVOyouthCHURCH. Pastor Sam has been anointed by God to speak to the students of Mesa First and I'm confident God is going to use him big time. I feel blessed to be a part of this ministry and can't wait to be a part of DEVO during SNE in 2009.
Get Stoked,

Monday's are my day to accomplish everything. Ok I have to be honest, I wake up every Monday morning with a mission to get a lot of random to-do's out of the way and always wind up lounging. I do usually get out but not until the late afternoon and once my ambition for the day has started to digress.
Day's off are my blessing and my curse. I enjoy the time to relax and catch up on some reading and other things but I know I need to do more.
I am now making the decision to plan my Monday's. I am going to have a plan set from week to week of things that need to be done on a weekly basis and things that are specific to that week. Monday's are going to turn into my productive days! I'll let you guys know how it goes...
For now I want to know what you do. What do your off day's look like? Maybe it's a Saturday or Sunday but what do you do to accomplish the things you can't the rest of the week?
Help Me Out,
Shane

I've been realizing something the last few days that will forever change my life.
We are all screwed up people.
Every single one of us has a story. We've all made our fair share of mistakes. There have been things that have happened to all of us that put us in need of redemption. I don't care how good of a person someone may come off as, at one point in their life they've needed something more.
Have you ever met someone you can't relate to at all? Here's an example for you. Someone walks up to me and shares with me that he/she is losing their home and have no clue what to do. The person went on to share with me that he/she has two young children. So I am now standing in front of a single parent, struggling to raise his/her kids, who is now losing his/her home, and he/she wants me to pray with them.
Talk about being blindsided.
I don't know if there is a moment where I have felt more inadequate. The emotions that ran through me were infinite. I quickly tried to think of any situation that could relate, but I came up completely empty. So I bow my head and begin to pray for this person I have never met.
As I pray I begin to understand that I have never lost a house. Shoot, I'm blessed to have an abundance of material things but none of that matters because we are all screwed up people. So what if I haven't lost a house. I still have needs. God has had to drag me out of some pretty deep ruts. I know what it feels like to hurt. I can relate. I don't have to go through the same struggles someone else does to relate to them. I don't want to relate to someone else's struggle but I can completely relate to the outcome. I've been in tough places in my life, I've made my mistakes, and there is one solution to it all.
"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest". Matthew 28:11
That's how I relate. That's how we all relate. It's not the problems that bring us together. It's the solution. God is our answer. He provides for everyone who is weary and burdened. I haven't ever lost a home and I pray that I never ever will but you can be assured that I have had my moments where all I can do is pray. Where I know I need something and have faith that God still provides rest. He is our answer, he's our rest. No matter what you or someone you know is going through He is the solution. We may not all experience the same hardships but we all have the same solution, we just need to make the choice to allow God the key to our lives.

I can't believe it's here. The biggest and best holiday of the year is tapping on our shoulders. I still have presents to wrap and stockings to stuff. I can't wait for tomorrow morning, but some people are more excited about tonight. Christmas eve is evolving into a holiday of it's own. Different traditions pop us every year for families across the globe. From opening one present on Christmas eve to watching a specific movie, it seems that ever family has their nitch.
I like to think the Sanchez's do things pretty normal. My dad and I read Polar Express right before we go to bed and then leave out some milk and cookies for Santa. Yeah, yeah, laugh it up. Ok, I'm just kidding you can laugh all you want after all it is kind of ridiculous for an 18 yr old to be reading bedtime stories and setting out milk and cookies. The thing is, it's the joy of tradition. I firmly believe you never outgrow tradition. No matter what they are they identify you and your family. They make you different. That is one of the joys of Christmas. It allows people the chance to be a kid again. To have that joy of waking up in the morning and sitting in the living room with your family. Christmas is all about joy. From the presents to the traditions all are an attempt to emulate the joy that was brought to the world in the form of a baby boy.
Year after year I am blown away that everything about Christmas can relate to the real reason. We sometimes lose sight of the birth of Jesus but I believe we celebrate it in almost every part of Christmas. The purpose of Christ was to bring smiles to the faces of creation and allow them to live life to the full. That concept is exactly what Christmas is about, joy and the fullness of life!
Remember Christ in everything you do tonight and tomorrow. Don't forget that every tradition is a part of the celebration of Jesus who came to bring us joy in all we do.
Be Jolly,
Shane

I bought a new MacBook last night. O the joys of Mac. You don't understand how amazing it is to turn on a Mac for the first time unless you own one. I can assure you that it is an incredible experience.
The reason for my purchase is that I cracked the screen on my other MacBook. I don't even know what happened. I barely knicked it with my foot, but it was enough to completey crack my screen from top to bottom. I then discovered that my warranty with Apple Care doesn't cover external damage. Hmmm...so I had this computer that needs $700 in repair and I was planning on selling it soon anyways. I only had one option. I went and bought a new one and am now going to hook my old one to an external monitor and use it as a desktop. So now I have two computers and one can eventually be fixed to go back to it's orginal laptop self.
Eventhough Mac's warranty bites, I still cannot deny the product. I am confident that there is nothing quite like a Mac. I will never go back to PC even if Bill Gates were offering me a CEO spot in the company (ok that's a slight over-exageration) but still, Mac's are a gift from our Creator. Now, I hope this has convinced you that I am a sold out Mac owner. Go buy one maybe three, press the power button, and begin to enjoy the greatest computer ever made.

This video is moving in so many ways. What if we just truly loved and encouraged people? All people, Christian, Atheist, Muslim, etc; all people should receive God's love. We as Christians are called to portray that love and when we do God tends to impact lives in ways we could never dream.
Be Genuine,

I cannot wait for Christmas! We are 4 days away from the best holiday of the year. I have all my shopping done, I've been caroling, I've even made (watched someone make) cookies. I am totally and completely ready for Santa.
Now I'm going to shoot straight here. I'm stoked to give and receive presents. Now don't get me wrong I know the real reason of Christmas. I know that we received the greatest present in the history of history when God gave us His one and only son, but I am not going to be the person who sits around and says the presents don't mean anything to me. "It's all about being together and a warm cozy fire." That's fudge! Everyone loves receiving and giving presents! You love the expression on someones face when you buy them the perfect gift. You can't match the feeling of opening up the biggest present under the tree. It's exciting, tantalizing, memorable.
And there is absolutely nothing wrong with fully anticipating your presents.
I think people get so caught up in the "it's not about what I get" act because they are afraid people will lose sight of the real reason for Christmas. Now I totally understand that people can get caught up in the material part of the holiday and forget about our Saviour, but if you do you have issues. Giving and receiving is what it's all about. I can't help but think Mary and Joseph were overwhelmed with joy and excitement when the wise men brought gifts. I can't help but think that they told Jesus the story of three kings coming to celebrate His birth. I'm confident that Jesus remembered that moment His entire life and those men forever had favor with God. They brought their best for a child for his pure enjoyment. That should be our goal when we gift. It's not about who spends the most money or who has the best gift. You should give your best for the people you truly love and admire. When you receive a gift you should always remember the people who took the time to acknowledge and care about you. Though Christmas isn't all about giving and receiving presents, it's a very real and perfectly ok part of the holiday experience.
When you give and receive this year remember the person on the other end. Never forget that Christmas where they took the time to think of you. Put your best effort into buying or making a gift for someone you care about. Remember that Christmas is all about Jesus so give and accept as He did: with a humble, loving heart.
Enjoy The Christmas Experience,
Shane

Just the other night I was rolling the garbage can to the curb and thinking about the greatness of God.
Not because of the odor of the garbage reminded me of sin that his son Jesus has kicked to the curb, or something cheesy like that. Instead my mind was racing due to something I couldn't see.
The sun rises every morning. Whoa, I knew this one would be deep. But seriously, come on, without the sun we cease to exist. This gigantic ball of fire in the middle our galaxy is the center point of humanity. It gives us heat, it lights our days, it provides energy for creation to exist. All in all it is a very important ball of gas. The thing that took my mind on an adventure was the fact that we expect it to rise every morning.
I can't see the sun at night but I still know and believe that it is there.
I began to wonder how a world that relies on something they can't see or feel for almost half of their day, struggles with the concept of a living God. We have complete confidence that in the morning the bright rays of the sun will illuminate our day but when it comes to a God that is always in us and evident all around us we just seem to refuse to grasp Him. Think about it. God created the sun. He created the moon. He made every plant, animal, and person you see both at night and in the morning. God knew what he was doing. Why do you think some animals are nocturnal? I like to think it's because God never sleeps and needs something to do while we are sawing logs. Just remember that God is even more reliable than the sun. As confident as we are about the sun rising in the morning, we should be even more confident about a God who never goes away. His Spirit covers all creation and his glory never ever sets. He is an amazing God and even through our finite Earth he has created us to depend solely on Him.
God doesn't hide until morning.

Oh the joys of college finals...
I am confident that more coffee and electricity is consumed around the week before Christmas and the week before summer break than any other time of the year. Across the country millions of students pull red-eye nights in order to achieve their desired grades.
Last night I became one of these.
I stayed up all night/morning and worked on a project due tonight. I even took Heather to the airport at 5:00am and then stopped at the local Starbucks to study. This is definitely a new concept for me. High school was nothing like this vast, strange world called college. Nothing could have prepared me for this. The great thing is that I enjoyed every second. I would be lying if I said I didn't feel like a genuine college student as I crept into the wee hours of the night. I now felt like the college student I have always dreamt of becoming.
Don't judge me.
So what if I procrastinated. I held off a little longer than usual on my final project. I don't regret it. I have been more studious this first semester of college than I have been my entire life. I may have slipped up on my final project by waiting until the last second, but I wouldn't trade the experience for the world. I am slowly beginning to understand my ability to accomplish goals under pressure. Now, trust me, I know the best approach is not to procrastinate but it is comical how quickly you are forced to do your best when you put yourself in between and rock and a hard place. You quickly begin to be forced to greatness when you understand that your tight situation is due to your own lack of preparation.
Don't misunderstand me. This is not a call to wait to the last second and display irresponsibility, but instead to make the best of you worst moments. When you begin to understand the good that can come out of the bad you begin to understand the grace of God. That is what He does. He turns our irresponsibility into our greatness if we admit our failures and honor his guidance. Begin to turn your lack of preparation into your opportunities for greatness under pressure. Do not religiously be an irresponsible person, but this is a real world and mistakes are a reality for all of us. Begin to allow God to develop a determined, positive character in you during your times of error.
Be Cool Under Pressure,
Shane

When is the last time you stopped and talked to someone you didn't know?
How many people have tried to open up a conversation with you, just to find themselves rejected and ignored?
Driving home from the Suns game last night I was waiting in the infamous mile long line of cars (which I later maneuvered my way out of) and came to a stop near a homeless man begging for food. He was walking from car to car holding his sign and hoping for someone to acknowledge him. I had no food but we had just received a coupon for a free iced coffee upon exiting the arena so I decided to offer him what I had. He was grateful for the coupon, but then he began asking questions.
He wanted to talk. He wanted to hear about the big plays, he wanted to talk about how unfair the matchup was, he even wanted to talk about the weather. His sign said hungry but his heart screamed lonely. I began to wonder how long it had been since someone gave him the time of day. I was blown away that a man living in the streets about a mile away from the arena had no clue what was going on inside. As he was passed by those of us that are fortunate to have a home to drive to in our nice $25,000 automobiles all he was looking for was an acknowledgment. Someone to make him feel like he was alive.
The reality of all of this hit me. I was not only convicted but challenged. I realized that I need to take more time to acknowledge the world around me. I need to take the time to slow down and pay attention to the people I normally fly by.
Take some time today to talk to someone. It doesn't have to be the homeless person on a corner. It can be the cashier at the grocery store, it can be the person ringing the Salvation Army bell where you are shopping, it could be your own son or daughter, it could even be your mom or dad. Whoever it is take the time to let them know they are living a life that means something. No matter where or who they are God loves them and you care enough to take some time out of your day to share that love with them.
Talk More,
Shane

The Sun's suck!
At least I think so.
What in the world is going on? How can a team with so much talent play like a bunch of sissy's? Is it Terry Porter? Is it the lack of a strong power forward? What in the world is going on?
Jason Richardson, save us! Please do something to make us better! We need something. Fire Porter, hire Tonya Harding to hurt people, build a new arena; something, anything!
I believe in you Phoenix Suns, please don't let me down again!
What do you think of the 08'-09' Suns? Any hope?

I guess I'm a little behind, but I watched the Invisible Children video for the first time about a week ago. This movement is life changing in so many ways. I really enjoyed this video as it brings light to what is happening in a country where people are fighting to live. For more info on the Invisible Children movement check out their website.
We need to get involved and change our world!

Have you ever had one of those moments where it hits you? Where you feel so strongly that God is talking to you and that he wants you to do something? It is an incredible prompting. Those are the prayer times that move us. It's in those kind of moments where we feel like nothing can stop us. That no matter what happens we are following through to the end.
And then 10 minutes go by...
Your mind begins to race. Your human nature begins to creep up and make you question everything that you were so firm on just a little while ago. You begin to sift through the plans and come up with the idea that it just won't work. You begin to wonder what others will think? "What if I fail?" "Am I just backing out of a situation I don't want to be in?" All of these stupid, fleshy thoughts run through our mind like a hamster in a wheel and eventually we flake. Eventually we give in to the natural and completely forget about the supernatural. We decide that no matter what God's voice sounded like, it just won't work for us...
But, what happens if we listen?
What happens if we walk to the edge of the high dive and jump off with all of our force and find that God is waiting to catch us? Isn't that a risk worth taking?
I really like what Mark Batterson says in his book Wild Goose Chase.
Is it that time for you? Should you be making the decision that could change your life forever? Have you heard God's voice directing you and then suppressed it with your own mortal will? I encourage you that no matter what you think, as long as God has your back it's more than safe to take that step. As long as your are living a life that is pleasing to Him, you should never be afraid. It may take days, or even years before you feel like He caught you after that initial jump; but nonetheless that moment is worth everything.
Stop Praying and Start Acting,
Shane

"Pray about everything. Then pray some more. But at some point, you need to quit praying and start acting."We all do this. We spend months praying and seeking advice from God when, in reality, we can do something about it ourselves. If you had that original prompting than is it that far of a stretch to say that God has already answered your prayer? Maybe He's the one waiting for you.

I want to share my devotion verses from this morning:
So let God work his will in you. Yell a loud no to the Devil and watch him scamper. Say a quiet yes to God and he'll be there in no time. Quit dabbling in sin. Purify your inner life. Quit playing the field. Hit bottom, and cry your eyes out. The fun and games are over. Get serious, really serious. Get down on your knees before the Master; it's the only way you'll get on your feet.
James 4:7-10
It's this easy?
I think sometimes we give the Devil too much credit. We tend to underestimate the power of God. This hit me as I was reading this verse. "'Yell a loud no to the Devil'? Really? That's too easy, come on God. I know there has to be some trick. Maybe first I should fast, or maybe I just have to put up with it to show how tough I am."
Or maybe all we have to do is declare who is Lord in our lives.
We need to live every day knowing that God is a whisper away. That no matter what we face He wants to help us. He wants us to be serious about Him and make it clear to the Devil that we aren't buying what he is selling. It's easy to build up the Devil and give him credit for everything bad that happens, but sometimes maybe it's just us. You see, the Devil isn't God. (Shocked a few people there). He is a fallen angel. He doesn't know what you are thinking, he's not always resting on your shoulder, he doesn't possess the power that God does. He has been watching you though. He knows how to get to you. He understands what makes you fall and how to tempt you. The encouraging thing is that none of that matters as long as you depend on God, who is within a whispers distance. John 4:4 says "...greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world."
So everyday remember who is in control. Declare Christ in your life because honestly, the Devil doesn't stand a chance.

I'm getting ready to head out to a high school basketball game and it got me to thinking. Isn't our country incredible?
The thing is, I am going to watch a new student from our church play in his first regular season game in America. His name is Blondy Baruti and he's a 6' 9" center from the Congo in Africa. He has been coming to our church about 3 months and just moved to the U.S. this year. Now he is the star player and social king on the Mesa High School basketball team.
This is crazy. Less than a year ago he lived in a worn torn country where people go day in and day out fighting to survive. Now he is in the greatest nation in the world playing on a public high school basketball team.
Blondy is America. He is what so many around the world wish to become and what some envy so incredibly much. He is the story of our ancestors. He is example of the strive to pursue the dream that dwells deep within their hearts. He is an incredible kid and will be an incredible man of God. He displays humbleness and a true sense of gratefulness towards God. The sad thing is that many students today take opportunity for granted. He knows what it means to be thankful. He knows what it means to go from limited opportunity to limitless opportunity and he approaches his dreams with a humble heart.
He has challenged me to think about all that I have done in my 18 years on this Earth. I have been blessed to have been born in the USA with the entire world at my fingertips. He had to push, he had to dream, he had to survive to get to the place that God so graciously chose for me.
I encourage to take some time to thank God for where you are right now. The struggles, the homework, the hurt, the past...none of that matters. You are sitting in the greatest country on the entire planet. A land where you struggle to choose a career because that freedom is so overwhelming. A nation that allows you to live right next door to a Muslim, and have a Christian, and a Jew both across the street and on the other side. One that allows you to live out the dreams and goals that your Creator has placed deep inside.
Stop asking God to bless the U.S.A. if you don't take the time to bless him.
Live American,
Shane

I worked out today...
Before you say "so what" hear me out. It's been months. If you don't know me I used to take pride in the amount of time I spent in the gym. I used to love working out and exercising and no, not because I wanted to look like the Hulk. I enjoyed the escape from school, work, and everything else that is "stressful" to a high school student. Now that I have graduated I have seemed to misplace my gym schedule and diet plan. I tend to take more pride in what I can do on a computer than how long I can run without passing out. This troubles me. Am I just on route to become another fat, lazy American? Shouldn't I take pride in what scripture calls in 1 Corinthians, "a temple of the Holy Spirit"?
Now don't look at this as vanity. In no way am I saying that I want to look like a body builder or even have a six pack but I do want to be healthy. I want to feel like the athlete I was a year ago. I want to create good habits that I will hold on to and hopefully pass on to my children. I think It is absolutely necessary for us to take care of our bodies. God has put us in control of ourselves during our time here on Earth, shouldn't we hold that responsibility to the highest regard?
I know some people may read this and think I am stupid. Honestly, if you do, it's probably because you've been sitting in front of your computer all day eating Ruffles and enjoying the illumination of your ceiling lamp. Get out there. Get a life. Take care of your "temple". Shouldn't you take responsibility for one of the few things you can control?
Don't Be Lazy,
Shane

Tomorrow is the day I have been waiting for. I will wake up at 3:30am and head to the airport, to then sit on a plane with a ton of groggy people. Alright there's a catch. When I land I will be escorted (ok, really my parents are just picking Heather and I up) to Disneyland! O, the wonderful land of Disney. What makes this place the self-proclaimed "happiest place on Earth". Why do millions of people flock to Anaheim, CA every year to visit a place that is ran by a mouse? Is it the lights? The music? The overall experience? The fact is, it's all of these. People love Disneyland because the park settles for nothing short of spectacular. Everything they do is top of the line. They have set the standard for a great experience and people expect the best.
Shouldn't your church do the same?
Why do people get sick of church? Now I understand that a church is not like Disneyland, but in a way can't the experience be just as breathtaking? Why does church have to be a dry, religious experience? If life change is truly happening it shouldn't be boring. Church should be a place where visitors and regulars alike come expecting a great experience.
This requires the church to dream big. It requires leadership to be full of fresh ideas with hearts that require the best! The church should push to be top notch. Everything they do should be of the highest quality possible. Even if something doesn't go as planned, the heart behind the event should be for perfection. With this attitude the church can and will be an exciting place to be. People will love the atmosphere and in turn take the excitement beyond the walls of the church. Don't settle for anything short of wholehearted. Push yourself to help your church be breathtaking.
Expect Greatness,
Shane

Mirror-"Something regarded as accurately representing something else."
This seems like an obvious definition but think a little harder. The first half of Hebrews 1:3 says "This Son perfectly mirrors God, and is stamped with God's nature..." When I read this it seemed pretty simple. We all understand that Jesus is the Son of God, but that's not what it's talking. It says he "perfectly mirrors God". Jesus is a spitting image of his Father. He is God in flesh. 2000 years ago when he was born, when he spoke, and when they were nailing him to the cross they were looking into the face of God Himself.
That made me think...who do people see when they look at me? Do they see an 18 year old student who spends too much time on his facebook and trying to get the latest updates for his MacBook and iphone? Or do they see a man who would give up his time for anyone? Do they see someone who is selfish and would rather spend money on new clothes or the latest technology? Or do they see someone who would give everything to invest in the lives of those who have nothing? Do they see Christ or do they see my sinful nature and selfish pride? Christ gave everything and requires only our commitment to Him. I want people to see Christ in me and I want to be able to look in the mirror and know that His likeliness is staring back.
It's not about how good of a person you are or the causes you associate yourself with. It's your heart. It's what only God can see and what you have hopefully given completely to Him. It's about your reflection, it's about who you see in the mirror.
So just one question: Who's staring back at you?
Clean Your Mirror,
Shane

Ok, ok, I'm not sharing my political values with the world by titling this post "change". Instead I want to talk about something most people have an extreme phobia of. This morning at my home church our lead pastor announced one of the most exciting ideas at our church since we stopped using hymnals. Now don't get me wrong there is nothing wrong with singing songs that our Pilgrim ancestors used to sing but there is something very wrong when a church gets comfortable. That is a scary place to be as a follower of Christ. Today our pastor announced that we would be eliminating our Wednesday night events and instead having our Sunday Night Experience. Everything that we offer on a Wednesday night and much, much more will be offered during SNE starting in January. Now before you curse us and tell your friends that we must not be Pentecostal, this came just as much as a shock to me the first time I heard it. Then I began to think and came to the conclusion that this is brilliant. This is what our church has needed for a long time. A shake up isn't always a bad thing. Changes are a measure of just how far we have sunk into the La-Z-Boy we label as "Christianity". Shouldn't we want to shake things up from time to time? Isn't that what Christ sole purpose was: to change the destiny of our lives by saving us from an eternal death? So, next time, before you decide to lose taste in something that has "changed", maybe you need to check how long you have been staying in the same place while everyone around you has been moving forward. We must be people that strive to not only experience life change, but change the lives of people around us!
What are some changes that you marked off as "pointless" too quickly?
Live Changed,
Shane

This is it. My first chance at showing the world how and what I think on a daily basis. I have always been somewhat intimidated by the blogosphere and it's many citizens but I think I'm ready to take on the challenge. I want to express myself. I want you to know what the Creator is doing on a daily basis in the life of an ordinary student with extraordinary dreams.
Interactive: I want to know what is going on in your life.
Resourceful: I will share the knowledge that I am gaining from the leaders and influential people in my life.
Driven: Let me know ideas and choices you've had/made that will positively influence the ones I will have/make in the future.
Encouraging: We are surrounded by a world that is in constant conflict. The news, the radio, the grocery store parking lot; everywhere we look there is conflict. I plan on breaking this norm. I refuse to live a life short of God's never-ending joy.
A Good Time: It's not all business, this will be a place for fun.
